DT

Design Technology

At St Michael’s we strive for the children to be able to design, create and evaluate products, using clear vocabulary and making links to other subjects where possible. We would like the children to take risks in their learning and become critical thinkers, using practical skills to do so.

DT Projects

Below you can see pictures and/or descriptions of DT projects from across the school.
Key Stage Two
Year 4 Christmas Cards with an Electrical Circuit

In Year 4, pupils used their scientific knowledge and design skills to make fabulous Christmas cards with an electrical circuit and light up element. Pupils explored existing products, made prototypes, designed and made their own final product.
Key Stage One

Year 2 - Smoothies

As part of the food technology aspect of Year 2's DT curriculum, Year 2 made smoothies.

Throughout the topic they investigated existing smoothies, tasted a variety of fruit and vegetables to see what they would like in their smoothie, practiced chopping and cutting skills on fruits and vegetables and designed packaging for their smoothie.

A super unit enhanced by a visit from Mrs Witts who runs a smoothie business.

Take a look at the pictures below showing the wonderful learning taking place during this topic.

Year 2 - Moving Vehicles

In Year 2 pupils designed and made their very own moving vehicle using wood and card.

Pupils sawed wood dowels using a junior hacksaw to create their axels and used cardboard boxes brought in from home as the body of their vehicles.

Pupils did a wonderful job creating some excellent designs showing great wood work and joining skills throughout.
Year 2 DT Spring 2022

Throughout the Spring term, Year 2 have been creating a woodwork project 'Animal Transport Cages'.

They explored the features of an animal transport cage, designed, measured and made their very own animals transport cages.

They learnt how to use a junior hacksaw safely, and with some support, used various joining techniques to build their animal transport cages.

See below pictures of the project.
